Deep Thoughts: Welcome to another Deep Thoughts which represent my PERSONAL views & don’t reflect ANY Organization that I work with! This edition will have thoughts from all around the hockey world among other things & it is LONG so unfollow if you don’t want them.
DT: Remove Gerard Gallant in LVGK & the other 9 Head Coaches in the NHL Western Conference Top 10 have played a total of 48 NHL games. The idea that you have to have played in the NHL to coach today is dead. Communication, tactics & ability to adjust are necessary in today’s NHL.
DT: AM34 is going to sign his new ticket soon so if anyone thinks Marner is coming in under $9M just doesn’t get it. Darren Ferris doesn’t play around while Mitch & his family have faced doubters every step of the way. A big ticket will validate he is one of the best in the NHL.
DT: Full disclosure that we had Pulijarvi at #3 overall in 2016 ahead of Dubois, Tkachuk & Keller b/c we believed his frame & IQ were impressive. He still has time but EDM should move him as the fit isn’t there & McDavid’s body language indicates he doesn’t want to play with him.
DT: If you want more proof that the NHL has changed forever. 5 of the current Top 7 scorers in the NHL are 6’0 or smaller. It’s not a secret the game is small & skilled these days but teams & scouts better change their bias against smaller players or they will miss the boat.
DT: Just like every year, Armchair Scouts & the Media want to try & create a huge debate about who is #1 in the 2019 NHL Draft. Let me be clear when I say that it is Jack Hughes. Kakko played well at the WJC’s & very well since but Hughes has the higher upside & stays at #1.
DT: The dismissal of Todd Gill in Owen Sound is a bit strange as he’s a good guy & done a fine job but what most people are missing is the emergence of Joey Hishon & an expected bigger role. Hishon is a rising star in the game & has had multiple offers from teams so keep an eye out.
DT: Andre Tourigny of the Ottawa 67’s is getting a lot of attention & I’m betting he's in the NHL in 19/20. If so, a name to keep in mind to replace him is David Bell. Currently an assistant in the AHL & former HC in Niagara, he is one of Brian Kilrea’s favorite former players.
DT: The move of the Kootenay Ice from Cranbrook to Winnipeg is sad but an unfortunate sign of the times. The attendance in Cranbrook was very poor & the opportunity to go to a lucrative market was too much to ignore. The Ice have struggled but they do have some great young pieces.
DT: I saw @FriedgeHNIC put a note in his 31 Thoughts about 3 @USportsca players that NHL teams are looking at. Those 3 are hot right now but NHL teams are more interested in that level than ever before. If you are a hockey fan, get out to see a game b/c it’s phenomenal hockey!
DT: Speaking of 31 Thoughts, I’m not a shill for anyone but the podcast with @jeffMarek & @FriedgeHNIC is the best in the game. If you don’t listen, you should because it sounds like you are eavesdropping while those 2 & their guest just chat casually. #MustListen

DT: Some Prospect Thoughts: The USA U18 team is killing it with 8 in our Top 35; Last year we pumped Ty Dellandrea & people thought we were nuts so this year it’s Nick Robertson; Spencer Knight is the best goaltending prospect in a long time
DT: Some more Prospect Thoughts: Don’t sleep on the big German Moritz Seider; Brett Leason is the real deal despite being 2 years older than most; Suzuki & Honka both have Top 10 ability but they need to bring it every night; Tomasino & McMichael are really coming
DT: In OHL Draft news, Team Ontario is prepping for the Canada Winter games & I like their team. I could quibble with a few picks but @DarrellWoodley1 has put a lot of work in & I’d suggest they are the heavy favorites to win gold but it’s always a challenge
DT: Some guys I really like for the OHL Draft; Mason Mctavish(Favorite player in the draft) Red Savage, Landon Cato, Zach Betts, Roman Schmidt, Kobe Tallman, Ethan Larmand, Jon-Randall Avon, Daniel Michaud, Danny Zhilkin, Ryan Winterton, Braden Hache & Connor Lockhart
DT: Naturally, I didn’t name any of my players from Team @NOHAhockey for the OHL Cup b/c like my own children, I love them all equally. I will say that I expect a minimum of 10 to be drafted in April so we are going to make some noise & shock some people. #RISETogether
DT: Lastly, I’m going to start linking a former article or rankings that we have put together in each #DeepThoughts just to show how smart (or usually stupid) we have been in years past.
